Reinforced sheets,\u00a0sewing thread, buckles and buttons were soon joined by fabrics and\u00a0materials designed specifically to construct uppers.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the 1980s, the company\u2019s important clientele and\u00a0good profits brought it to the attention of some financial investors.<\/p>\n<p>The company was sold in the early nineties, but without the inspiring\u00a0presence of the founder and in a market very different from the one\u00a0that could be managed by the company\u2019s resources, it began to\u00a0decline. During this period, the company saw some equity transfers\u00a0and a worsening of the financial crisis; the turnover and margins\u00a0decreased significantly.<\/p>\n<p>The turning point came in 2011 when the French fund, the leading\u00a0shareholder at that time, entrusted the presidency to Paolo Ciccarelli\u00a0(former Chief Financial Officer of the London Stock Exchange Group\u00a0and Barclays), in agreement with the other shareholders. An expert\u00a0in extraordinary operations, he initially dedicated himself to the\u00a0financial issues and governance of the company.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, additional conditions came into existence and, with the\u00a0agreement of the majority of shareholders, from December 2013, Paolo\u00a0Ciccarelli organised and implemented a recovery plan for the company\u00a0and transferred the ownership to a group of four shareholders who\u00a0wanted to invest time, resources and expertise in the \u201cnew\u201d company.<\/p>\n<p>Today Schmid is owned by four shareholders, two of which, the\u00a0President and General Manager, are directly involved in the company\u2019s\u00a0ordinary and strategic management.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to two years of intensive turnaround work, 2015 will see\u00a0a Schmid that has been reorganised in corporate, production,\u00a0commercial and organisational terms. This has led to the creation\u00a0and realisation of brand development and marketing plans and\u00a0diversification in sectors not traditionally belonging to the company\u2019s\u00a0core business, but that promise interesting growth in terms of sales\u00a0and margins.<\/p>\n<p>These plans are not only based on the absolute centrality of\u00a0the customer\/product\/service factors, but also on a profound\u00a0transformation of the corporate culture. In fact, the daily commitment\u00a0also focuses on consolidating a different kind of mentality, where\u00a0the emphasis is not so much on covering a role, but on the way in\u00a0which employees perform their job and push others to do likewise.<\/p>\n<p>From here comes a team that addresses the problems and identifies\u00a0common solutions, with an open dialogue between the various\u00a0functions within the company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Customer service<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of the new company, the focus is on the\u00a0combination between product, service and quality, and on the ability\u00a0to innovate and present, season after season, new and interesting\u00a0proposals and products.<\/p>\n<p>To better serve customers, Schmid has divided its customers into two\u00a0main categories: big fashion houses, which do not need Schmid to\u00a0create their collections, but require technical support and incentives to propose new products; and other manufacturers, which must be able to innovate their collections without necessarily investing in resources usually available only to big brand names.<\/p>\n<p>To meet both of these requirements, Schmid collaborates with stylists and cool hunters who can provide guidelines along which the company\u2019s product department can develop new proposals and<\/p>\n<p>suggestions. Without neglecting the constant presence at major trade shows in Milan and Paris.<\/p>\n<p>This new approach also extends to business communication. The 2015 Trend Book prepared by Schmid will be an \u201cevent\u201d in the footwear industry, while the company completely revamped its<\/p>\n<p>website (www.schmid.it) in 2014, making it available on tablets, computers and smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>Today Schmid intends to become, by 2015, the most important converter company in the footwear industry. Its strategy will be based on delivering catalogue products within certain dates (in some cases, immediate) and on a high level of certified quality.
